Warm White vs Cool White

The colour of your light changes everything.

GUIDE

The Ultimate Room lighting guide

Lighting is the difference between a basic house and a well-designed home. The right lighting improves function, highlights materials and shapes how each room feels. Poor lighting flattens spaces, creates shadows and limits how you use your home.

The Psychology of Light

At 8:00 PM, your body should be slowing down. Melatonin should be rising. Your brain should be preparing for rest.

How many lumens for a desk lamp?

A desk lamp needs 800 to 1200 lumens on the work surface for general study, reading, and home office tasks. Detailed work such as drawing, sewing, or electronics suits 1200 lumens or higher. A dimmable LED desk lamp covers more than one task by stepping output up or down to suit the job.

Can you use a desk lamp to grow plants?

A standard desk lamp does not produce the right light spectrum to grow plants effectively. Most LED study table lamps emit white light tuned for human vision, missing the red and blue wavelengths plants need for photosynthesis. Use a dedicated grow light for indoor seedlings, herbs, and houseplants.

Should you use a desk lamp with a laptop?

Use a desk lamp with a laptop to reduce eye strain, balance screen brightness with surrounding light, and improve focus during longer sessions. Position the desk lamp on the opposite side to your writing hand to avoid shadows, and choose a 4000K LED study lamp with adjustable brightness for daytime and evening work.

Desk lamps vs floor lamps for a home office

Desk lamps deliver focused task light directly onto a work surface, while floor lamps provide broader ambient light around the room. Most home offices benefit from both, with a study table lamp on the desk for screen and paperwork tasks and a floor lamp behind or beside the desk to balance overall room brightness.

How long do LED desk lamps last?

Quality LED desk lamps last 25,000 to 50,000 hours of use, which works out to 17 to 34 years at four hours of daily operation. LED study table lamps run cooler than halogen or incandescent equivalents, use up to 90 percent less energy, and rarely need a bulb replacement during the lamp's working life.

Study Table Lamps

Study table lamps deliver focused, glare-free light for reading, writing, and screen work at a home office desk, study nook, or bedside. Lighting Direct NZ stocks a wide range of desk lamps including LED, adjustable-arm, dimmable, and clamp-mounted models. Whether you are setting up a dedicated home office, a student study desk, or a compact bedside reading lamp, the right study table lamp balances brightness, colour temperature, and reach with the size and style of your space.

How to choose the right study table lamp

Choose a study table lamp using five practical factors: brightness in lumens, colour temperature in Kelvin, lamp height and reach, control type such as touch or dimmer, and base footprint. Match the desk lamp to your task, because long study sessions, detailed craft work, and screen-based office work each call for different specifications.

Brightness: Aim for 800 to 1200 lumens on the work surface for general study and desk work. Detailed tasks such as drawing or model making suit 1200 lumens or higher.
Colour temperature: 4000K is the neutral white standard for study desks and home offices. 3000K suits bedside reading. Tuneable models shift between the two.
Height and reach: Most desk lamps measure 350mm to 500mm tall, with adjustable arms extending 400mm to 600mm across the desk for flexible positioning.
Controls: Look for dimmable, touch-control, or USB-charging study lamps if you want flexible operation and a tidy desk surface.
Base or clamp: Weighted bases sit on the desktop. Clamp-mounted desk lamps free up surface space, ideal for compact study nooks.

Types of desk lamps and study table lamps

Desk lamps come in five common formats: LED study lamps, adjustable-arm desk lamps, clamp-mounted lamps, traditional banker's lamps, and dual-purpose bedside study table lamps. Each suits a specific scenario, from focused screen work and detailed task lighting through to softer reading light beside the bed.

LED desk lamps: Energy-efficient, cool-running, and long-lasting, often with built-in dimming and colour temperature control.
Adjustable-arm desk lamps: Multi-joint arms reposition light exactly where you need it, ideal for shared or multi-purpose desks.
Clamp-mounted desk lamps: Fix to the edge of the desk, freeing up the surface for keyboards, books, and monitors.
Banker's lamps: Traditional green or brass shade design, suited to classic studies, reading rooms, and home libraries.
Bedside study table lamps: Compact, dual-purpose desk lamps that work for late-night reading and quick desk tasks in a guest room or studio.
