The Simple Guide to Choosing the Right Bulb

Learn how to choose the right light bulb for your home by considering style, brightness (lumens/watts), and colour temperature (Kelvins).

How do you choose the right outdoor lighting for your home?

Identify the primary purpose for each location: security, safety, or ambience. Match the fitting type to that purpose and confirm the IP rating suits the exposure level. Choose a finish that coordinates with the exterior materials of the property. Solar and mains-powered options are available depending on the accessibility of the installation point.

Are outdoor lights waterproof?

Outdoor lights are not universally waterproof. Each fitting carries an IP rating that specifies its level of water and dust resistance. IP44 suits covered locations. IP65 and above suits fully exposed installations. Always check the IP rating in the product specification and match it to the actual exposure level of the location before purchasing.

Can you add a sensor to an outdoor light?

Yes. Many outdoor fittings are compatible with external PIR sensor modules. Some include an integrated sensor as standard. A licensed electrician can advise on detection range, activation duration, and sensitivity adjustment for the specific fitting and location.

Can outdoor lighting be used indoors?

Outdoor-rated fittings can be used indoors, as IP44 or IP65 exceeds most indoor requirements. The reverse is not true: indoor fittings must not be used outdoors unless they carry an appropriate IP rating. Using an indoor fitting outside will void any warranty and may create a safety risk.

What are the best outdoor lights for a New Zealand home?

The most effective combination is a wall-mounted entry light for the facade, pathway or bollard lights for navigation, and ambience lighting for the outdoor entertaining area. Fittings with IP65 ratings, powder-coated or marine-grade finishes, and LED light sources provide the best long-term performance across New Zealand's varied climate conditions.

Outdoor Lighting

Outdoor lighting serves two purposes in a New Zealand home: it makes a property safer after dark, and it extends the character of your interior design into the garden, driveway, and outdoor entertaining areas. At Lighting Direct, you will find a comprehensive range of exterior lights, from wall-mounted lanterns and pathway lights to in-ground spotlights and security fittings, designed for New Zealand conditions.

Security, Safety, and Ambience: Three Jobs Outdoor Lighting Does

Outdoor lighting needs to do one of three things, and the right fitting depends on which job it is being asked to perform. Security lighting deters intruders and activates on movement. Safety lighting marks pathways, steps, and driveways for confident navigation after dark. Ambience lighting extends your living space outdoors, creating atmosphere in a garden, on a deck, or across an outdoor entertaining area.

Security fittings use passive infrared sensors to detect movement and flood a targeted area with high-output light. A well-positioned security light at an entry point, garage, or side gate removes the concealment intruders rely on. Position the sensor to cover the approach to the entry rather than the door itself, giving the light time to activate before a person arrives.

Pathway and step lights guide movement along driveways, garden paths, and exterior staircases. Low-level bollard lights, in-ground fittings, and step lights keep the source close to where it is needed, reducing glare for anyone approaching the property. This matters particularly for NZ homes with sloped sections, multi-level decks, or long driveways where visibility after dark is a genuine safety consideration.

Ambience lighting includes wall lanterns, garden spotlights, deck lights, and festoon fittings used to create atmosphere and visual interest. Uplighting a tree, washing light across a timber fence, or illuminating a water feature extends the useful hours of an outdoor space long after the sun goes down.

IP Ratings and NZ Conditions: What Every Outdoor Fitting Must Have

Every exterior light fitting must carry an IP rating sufficient for its intended location. IP ratings classify a fitting's protection against water and solid particles. For outdoor use in New Zealand, the minimum acceptable IP rating depends on the exposure level of the location and the local climate conditions.

IP44 is the minimum for covered outdoor locations such as a pergola ceiling or sheltered wall. IP54 suits semi-exposed locations that receive indirect rainfall. IP65 and above is required for fully exposed fittings in direct contact with rain, coastal spray, or high-humidity environments. New Zealand coastal properties require fittings rated for salt air exposure, which affects both the IP rating and the finish specification.

The IP rating is listed in every product specification at Lighting Direct NZ. For any fitting in a weather-exposed location, confirm the rating before purchasing. A fitting with an insufficient rating will degrade rapidly and may create an electrical hazard. Installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician in accordance with New Zealand wiring regulations.
