What are LED light bulbs?

LED stands for light-emitting diode. An LED bulb produces light by passing an electrical current through a semiconductor material, which emits light as a byproduct. Unlike incandescent globes that heat a filament until it glows, LEDs generate very little heat relative to their light output, making them significantly more energy-efficient and longer-lasting than halogen and incandescent alternatives.

Why are LED bulbs better than halogen or incandescent?

LED bulbs use up to 80 percent less energy than incandescent globes and last up to 25 times longer. They run cooler, are available in the full range of colour temperatures from 2700K to 6500K, contain no mercury unlike CFL globes, and reach full brightness immediately with no warm-up period.

How long should LED bulbs last?

Quality LED bulbs are rated for 15,000 to 25,000 hours. At four hours of daily use, a 25,000-hour globe lasts over 17 years. Actual lifespan depends on operating temperature, switching frequency, and driver quality. Globes used in enclosed fittings with poor ventilation or on incompatible dimmer circuits will typically fail earlier than rated.

Why do LED bulbs flicker?

Flickering is most commonly caused by an incompatible dimmer switch, a loose connection, or an underpowered LED driver. On a dimmer circuit, replacing the existing switch with an LED-compatible model resolves the issue in most cases. Persistent flickering on a fixed circuit should be assessed by a licensed electrician.

How many watts does an LED bulb need to be for a room?

Use lumens rather than watts to assess LED brightness. For a bedroom or lounge, plan for 400 to 800 lumens per source. For a kitchen or bathroom, 800 to 1,200 lumens per fitting provides adequate task light. In wattage terms, a 6 to 10-watt LED produces the equivalent of a 40 to 60-watt incandescent globe. Choosing the Right LED Bulb: Fitting Type, Lumens, and Colour Temperature

The correct LED bulb for any fitting depends on three specifications: the base type, the lumen output, and the colour temperature. Selecting by wattage alone, as was standard with incandescent globes, does not work with LED bulbs because wattage indicates energy consumption rather than brightness. Lumens is the correct measure of light output.

Base types must match the fitting. The most common in New Zealand homes are E27 (large Edison screw), E14 (small Edison screw), B22 (bayonet cap), GU10 (twist-lock spotlight), and MR16 (low-voltage pin base). Check the existing globe or the fitting's product specification to confirm the base type before purchasing a replacement LED bulb.

Lumen output determines brightness. For a bedroom or lounge where ambient light is the goal, 400 to 800 lumens per globe is the practical range for standard ceiling heights. For a kitchen, bathroom, or workspace where task lighting is required, 800 to 1,200 lumens per fitting provides adequate output. For downlights in a 2.4-metre ceiling, 600 to 800 lumens per globe with a medium beam angle of 25 to 45 degrees suits most general-purpose installations.

Colour temperature determines the warmth or coolness of the light. For living rooms and bedrooms, 2700K produces warm white light suited to a relaxed atmosphere. For kitchens, bathrooms, and home offices, 3000K to 4000K delivers a cleaner output suited to tasks where visibility matters. Dimmable LED Bulbs: What You Need for Dimming to Work

Not all LED bulbs are dimmable, and not all dimmer switches are compatible with LED technology. For dimming to work correctly, three components must be compatible: the LED bulb must be rated as dimmable, the dimmer switch must be LED-compatible, and the fitting itself must support a dimmable globe. Using a non-dimmable LED bulb on a dimmer circuit causes flickering, buzzing, or premature failure of the globe.

Most older dimmer switches were designed for incandescent or halogen loads and do not work correctly with the lower wattage draw of LED bulbs. When replacing halogen globes with dimmable LEDs, have a licensed electrician check whether existing dimmer switches require replacement. LED-compatible dimmers are widely available.
