The Ultimate Room lighting guide
Lighting is the difference between a basic house and a well-designed home. The right lighting improves function, highlights materials and shapes how each room feels. Poor lighting flattens spaces, creates shadows and limits how you use your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to choose a flush mount light

Choose a flush mount light based on four practical factors: ceiling height, room size, style, and brightness. Standard 2.4-metre ceilings benefit most from a low-profile flush ceiling light that maintains head clearance, while larger rooms need a fitting with higher lumen output and a wider diameter to spread light evenly. Bathrooms, laundries, and covered exterior areas require an IP44-rated flush fitting for safe installation under New Zealand wiring regulations.

Brightness is measured in lumens, not watts. As a working guide, a bedroom needs around 1,000 to 2,000 lumens, a kitchen needs 4,000 to 8,000 lumens depending on size, and a hallway or entryway needs 1,500 to 3,000 lumens. Colour temperature also matters: 2700K creates a warm, relaxed feel for lounges and bedrooms, while 4000K delivers crisper, brighter light for kitchens and bathrooms.

The key decision factors at a glance:

  • Ceiling height, with flush mount lights ideal for ceilings under 2.7 metres
  • Room size, which sets the required diameter and lumen output
  • Style and finish, from traditional crystal to modern matte black or chrome
  • IP rating, with IP44 required for bathroom zones two and three
  • Colour temperature, from warm white 2700K to cool white 4000K

Types of flush mount lights

Lighting Direct NZ stocks four main types of flush mount lights: LED flush mounts, traditional flush ceiling lights, modern flush fittings, and DIY flush mounts. LED versions deliver the longest service life and lowest running costs, with built-in modules that last 25,000 hours or more. Traditional fittings feature crystal, brass, or glass detailing for classic and heritage interiors. Modern flush fittings use matte black, brushed chrome, or clean white finishes for contemporary New Zealand homes.

DIY flush mounts let you fit your own pendant cord and shade to a discreet ceiling base, giving the visual character of a pendant light with the slim profile of a flush ceiling light. The right choice depends on the look you want to achieve and how the room is used day to day.

Common flush mount light types include:

  • LED flush mount lights for energy efficiency and long-life lighting in bedrooms, hallways, and kitchens
  • Traditional flush ceiling lights with brass, crystal, or glass detailing for heritage and formal interiors
  • Modern flush fittings in matte black, brushed chrome, or white for contemporary spaces
  • IP44-rated flush mounts for bathrooms, laundries, and covered outdoor entryways
  • DIY flush mounts that combine pendant character with a low-profile ceiling fitting

Flush mount lights vs pendant lights

Flush mount lights sit flat against the ceiling, while pendant lights hang below it on a cord, chain, or rod. Flush mounts are the more practical choice for rooms with ceilings under 2.7 metres, hallways, bedrooms, and any space where head clearance matters. Pendant lights suit rooms with higher ceilings, dining tables, and kitchen islands where a feature fitting strengthens the design.

The right choice depends on three things: ceiling height, the visual statement you want to make, and the function the fitting has to perform. For ambient room illumination in a low-profile setting, a flush mount light is the better fit. For focused light over a defined zone, a pendant light delivers stronger task lighting and a clearer design feature.

Frequently asked questions about flush mount lights

What is a flush mount ceiling light?

A flush mount ceiling light is a fitting that mounts directly against the ceiling with no visible drop or hanging cord. The base of the fitting sits flat to the ceiling surface, and the diffuser, shade, or LED panel projects only a few centimetres downward. This slim profile makes flush mount ceiling lights well suited to rooms with standard or lower ceilings, hallways, and bedrooms where head clearance is important.

How do you install a flush mount light?

Flush mount light installation must be carried out by a licensed electrician in accordance with New Zealand wiring regulations. The electrician will switch off the circuit at the mains, secure the mounting bracket to the ceiling rose or junction box, connect the active, neutral, and earth wiring, then attach the diffuser or shade. Working with mains power is a regulated electrical task in New Zealand, so a qualified electrician is required.

Are flush mount lights bright enough for a main living room?

Yes. Flush mount lights are bright enough for a main lounge when the lumen output matches the room size. A lounge of 15 to 25 square metres usually needs 3,000 to 5,000 lumens of ambient light. A single large flush mount fitting can deliver this, or two smaller fittings can be spaced across the ceiling for more even coverage in open-plan spaces.

Can flush mount lights be used in bathrooms?

Flush mount lights can be used in bathrooms, provided the fitting carries the correct IP rating for the zone. An IP44-rated flush mount light is suitable for bathroom zones two and three under New Zealand wiring regulations, which covers most ceiling positions outside the direct shower or bath enclosure. Always confirm the IP rating before purchase, and have the fitting installed by a licensed electrician.

How many lumens does a flush mount light need?

Lumen requirements depend on room size and use. As a working guide, bedrooms need 1,000 to 2,000 lumens, lounges need 3,000 to 5,000 lumens, kitchens need 4,000 to 8,000 lumens, and bathrooms need 2,000 to 4,000 lumens. Hallways and entryways usually sit between 1,500 and 3,000 lumens. For larger rooms, splitting the lumen output across two or more flush mount lights gives more even coverage than a single central fitting.
